Thank you to everyone who attended our first event yesterday, a Zoom conversation with the always-brilliant Dilla Time author Dan Charnas! It was fun, insightful and inspiring to chop it up with my friend, a rigorous reporter with so much heart. Our media partner 48 Hills has archived the full chat so that you can check it out whenever you want. And don’t miss my Music Book Club Tribute to Dilla Time DJ set, mixed live with love, as always.
Next up: Danyel Smith’s Shine Bright: A Very Personal History of Black Women in Pop (2/7 at noon PT)
Speaking of live with love, I just finished another fun DJ mix that pays tribute to our next author and her book — here’s the Music Book Club Tribute to Shine Bright and Danyel Smith!

Gladys Knight & The Pips — Taste of Bitter Love (Joey Negro Remix)
Diana Ross — Boy U Turn Me (LNTG Edit)
Missy Elliott — Pass That Dutch
Whitney Houston — Fine (LeMarquis & FAB Remix)
Janet Jackson — Pleasure Principle (Long Vocal)
Jody Watley — Some Kind of Lover (Dance Remix)

Whitney Houston — Love Will Save The Day
“I really love that book,” Dan said as we were wrapping up the Dilla Time event yesterday and I told everyone to save the date for Shine Bright. “I knew that whatever she wrote about the figures that she chose was going to be great, and that’s why I read the book. I was absolutely bowled over that the most interesting story — even though those stories were fantastic — the most interesting story in the book is hers. Like, so good. So yeah, you’re going to enjoy that.”
See you on February 7!
In the news
This past week, I had some wonderful interviews run on Rock and Roll Globe and the Velocity Press website in the UK and I was invited to beam from California into a graduate music criticism course at Emerson College in Boston next month. The week before, Lily Moayeri wrote that great story in Book and Film Globe and Treble penned a news item announcing our arrival. A few more interviews and podcast appearances are coming up.
As you can imagine, all of this positive attention has made me somewhat of a press monster! So please let me know if you’d like to cover the project or ask myself and/or my producing partner Carly Eiseman to speak to your outlet, podcast/radio show or class. We’d also love to be invited to your conference or festival!
