DJ Disciple This Wednesday, February 21
Our third live Zoom event will be with the world-famous DJ Disciple! Use this Zoom link to join us to discuss his book The Beat, the Scene, the Sound: A DJ’s Journey through the Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of House Music in New York City this Wednesday, February 21 at noon Pacific Time/3 p.m. Eastern Time.
I made a special DJ mix in honor of the occasion called Music Book Club Tribute to DJ Disciple and The Beat, the Scene, the Sound. The mix is hosted on Mixcloud, which only allows DJs to include up to four songs by a single artist, so I started and ended with popular songs produced by Disciple and let the beats guide me from there! This newsletter platform doesn’t allow embeds of Mixcloud’s player, but you’ll find it and our other Music Book Club Tribute mixes on my Mixcloud profile page.
Lance Scott Walker This Sunday, February 25
Lance Scott Walker interviewed over 150 people for DJ Screw: A Life in Slow Revolution, and the result is a fascinating, leisurely read. Use this Zoom link to join us this Sunday, February 25 at noon Pacific Time/ 3 p.m. Eastern Time to discuss his book and celebrate the life of an incomparable DJ. Don’t forget to add the Music Book Club events calendar to your Google Calendar so you always have our dates and Zoom links in advance.
I also made a DJ mix in honor of this event that I hope you’ll check out called Music Book Club Tribute to DJ Screw: A Life in Slow Revolution. Facing that same Mixcloud rule of only allowing four songs by a single artist, this set includes DJ Screw classics, early local influences, songs influenced by him that were released after his passing in 2000 and artists beloved by his mother, who sold eight-track mixtapes to her friends long before her son became an enduring star.
